In a harrowing shootout last month captured by a body camera, Florida sheriff's officers fatally shot a man accused of stealing a smart watch after he opened fire.
The shooting happened Jan. 20 as Jacksonville sheriff's officers were conducting a burglary investigation involving a smart watch, First Coast News reports. The victim told officers that the watch had been stolen and was able to track it.
Officers followed the watch's signal to a 39-year-old living in a car on his grandmother's property. Once officers reached the location, they found a gun on top of the car and the suspect inside the unlocked vehicle, apparently asleep.
One officer begins talking to the man and asks him to get out of the car. The man refused, telling officers he couldn't get out because a flashlight was in his eyes and he couldn't see clearly.
The officer asks the man to exit again, and the suspect starts shooting at them. That's when the officers return fire, fatally shooting the man.
A bullet grazed an officer's face, but no other officers were injured in the exchange.
The shooting is under investigation.
